BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University’s premiere student jazz quartet, otherwise known as the "Room 101 Jazz Combo," will be featured in concert on Tuesday evening, October 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Meyer Recital Hall on the SBU Bolivar campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
The group formed out of the SBU Jazz Ensemble in the spring of 2009 and quickly forged a unique musical union that has allowed them to bring jazz music to a number of venues and events in the Bolivar area ever since.
This program will feature a number of jazz standards, including "A Night in Tunisia," "My Funny Valentine," "All of Me," and Dave Brubeck's "Blue Rondo a la Turk." "Intention in A Minor," an original jazz parody of the music of J.S. Bach by SBU music professor Renee Waters will be featured on the program as well.
Members of the quartet include Steven Thompson, saxophone; Michael Womack, piano; Jeremy Couch, bass; Andrew Lewis, drums; and the faculty sponsor of the group is Jeffery Waters, professor of music and dean of SBU's Geneva Casebolt College of Music, Arts and Letters.
"These are some of the finest jazz musicians I have had the opportunity to work with in my 21 years at SBU, and they have a wonderful, natural intuition and skill that they bring to their work--they make it a real joy for me to listen and respond to them as they collaborate and create in the spirit of jazz," Dr. Waters said.
