BOLIVAR, Mo. – The public is invited to attend a free concert featuring the Southwest Baptist University Chamber Orchestra, Dr. Brian K. Hopwood, conductor, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 4. The concert will be presented in the Meyer Recital Hall, Casebolt Music Center on the SBU campus.

An eclectic mix of traditional and modern works is included in the concert program. Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso, Op 6, No. 8, also known as the “Christmas Concerto,” will feature concertino (solo) violins, cello, and harpsichord.

The modern and contemporary Vier Kleine Stücke (Four Small Pieces) by Karel Husa was composed in 1955. Husa’s musical language includes driving rhythms and rich, modern harmonies using bitonality and modal scale forms. The work begins with a first movement containing six different stylistic variations. Some sections even have a modern jazz or rock feel. Sanseneon by Robert Frost is a commissioned work by the Ohio Music Education Association. At its premiere during a festival in Bellevue, Ohio, the work was untitled. The composer, who conducted the premiere, observed a map showing four of the counties represented by the performing students (Sandusky, Seneca, Erie, Huron). Searching for a title representative of the area, the composer began trying various combinations of the letters from these words, ultimately resulting in the new word and title.

The very lyrical A Quiet Music by Douglas Wagner and Leroy Anderson’s popular Plink, Plank, Plunk will round out the program.
