SBU professor selected as Advanced Placement reader

BOLIVAR, Mo.Dr. Shelley Kilpatrick, associate professor of psychology at Southwest Baptist University, was selected to participate in the College Board’s Annual AP Reading in Statistics. Each June, AP teachers and college faculty members from around the world gather to evaluate and score the free-response sections of the AP exams.

AP Readers are high school and college educators who represent many of the top academic institutions in the world. “The Reading draws upon the talents of some of the finest teachers and professors that the world has to offer,” said Trevor Packer, Senior Vice President, AP and College Readiness at the College Board. “It fosters professionalism, allows for the exchange of ideas, and strengthens the commitment to students and to teaching. We are very grateful for the contributions of talented educators like Dr. Kilpatrick.”

The AP program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school, with the opportunity to earn college credit. SBU offers college credit for proficient scores in 30 AP exam subjects. Research indicates that students who score well on the AP exams typically experience greater academic success in college and are more likely to earn a college degree than non-AP students.

In 2012, more than 11,000 AP readers evaluated more than 3.7 million AP exams.

SBU’s Bachelor of Social Work program approved for third year of candidacy

BOLIVAR, Mo.Southwest Baptist University received notice this month from the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation that its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program has been approved for a third year of candidacy.

The fourth site visit will be during the 2013-14 school year as the University works on Benchmark IV. The commission will vote on full accreditation in June 2014.

"Community support and the dedication of faculty and administration have made the growth and continued development of the social work program possible,” said Christine Saladino, MACE, LMSW, BSW Program director. “I am exceptionally thankful for those who have been a part of this process."

The first class of BSW students graduated in May 2013, and the new cohort that is beginning in the fall is the program’s largest class ever.

The BSW program at SBU will prepare students for entry-level positions in the social work field.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, the profession is growing faster than average for all occupations, especially in the areas of aging and health care services. There are currently more than 640,000 professional social workers employed in the United States.

For more information about the BSW program, contact Saladino at (417) 328-1740 or csaladino@sbuniv.edu.
