BOLIVAR, Mo. The Southwest Baptist University Department of Music presents Dr. Terri Knupps, euphonium, and Dr. Robert Carney, piano, in recital 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the Jane A. Meyer Recital Hall.  Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Dr. Knupps, Associate Professor of Music History and Low Brass, is a native of Magnolia, Arkansas.  She earned a D.M.A. in Euphonium Performance and a M.M. in Music History and Literature from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music after teaching public school band for two years in Louisiana.  She also holds a M.M. in Euphonium Performance from Northwestern State University of Louisiana and a B.M.E. in Instrumental Music from Ouachita Baptist University.

Dr. Knupps has won numerous awards in competitions sponsored by groups including the Music Teachers’ National Association and the International Tuba and Euphonium Association.  She has performed concerts and master classes in Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri.  In February 2011, Dr. Knupps will perform at the national meeting of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors in Gainesville, Florida.  Furthermore, she was a founding member of the championship-winning Fountain City Brass Band in Kansas City, MO and is currently an active member in the Basso Profundo Tuba/Euphonium Quartet and the Springfield Brass Choir.

This recital will be Dr. Carney’s premier performance as an SBU faculty member.  He is a native of Missouri and completed his undergraduate studies at Missouri State University.  He received the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from Louisiana State University and the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of North Texas in May 2010.  Dr. Carney has also studied at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina, with Alan Chow from Northwestern University in Chicago, and with Frank Heneghan from Ireland.

As a soloist and collaborative pianist, Dr. Carney has performed throughout the Midwest, South, and East Coast and appeared as soloist with the Louisiana State University and Missouri State University Orchestras.  Competitive performances have yielded numerous top prizes including first place in the Janice K. Hodges Contemporary Piano Competition, first place in the Missouri Music Teachers Association State Competition, and special recognition as a Presser Scholar by The Presser Foundation.

As a pedagogue, Dr. Carney's research has focused on defining a new pedagogical paradigm for integrating Web-based instruction with traditional theory instruction in the piano studio.  He is in great demand as a clinician and adjudicator and has presented lectures for music teachers associations.  While living in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Dr. Carney built a large and successful private studio in which his students received top awards in numerous local, regional, and international piano competitions.  Dr. Carney is married to Lisa Carney, and they have two sons, Jayden and Jonathan.

The recital will begin with a Baroque sonata by 18th-century German composer Georg Philipp Telemann, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach.  This work will feature Dr. Carney on the harpsichord, the most popular keyboard instrument of the Baroque era, and Shane Knupps, euphonium, in accompaniment.  The next piece will be Elégie by French composer Gabriel Fauré.  Written in 1883, this beautiful, melodic piece was originally written for cello and orchestra and has been adapted for euphonium and piano.  The final piece of the evening will be one of the most significant and demanding works written for the euphonium:  Concerto by Vladimir Cosma.  This modern work, written in 2000, truly showcases the lyrical and technical abilities of the instrument utilizing many gypsy-influenced melodies.

SBU CIS students gain valuable experience at internships

Southwest Baptist University News Release
Contact: Sharina Smith, Office of Marketing & Communications
417-328-1803 / scsmith@sbuniv.edu

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Seventeen Southwest Baptist University students majoring in computer science or computer information science gained valuable experience this summer through internships in some area of computer science or software engineering.

“We consider an internship to be a critical component in our students’ educational preparation,” said Dr. Tim DeClue, chair of the SBU Department of Computer and Information Sciences.  “There is nothing that can replace the experience a student gains by working with practicing software engineers and scientists.  The fact that our students earn a pretty decent wage for their internship experience makes it even better.”

Seven CIS Department students interned for the summer at Duck Creek Technologies, a company located in Bolivar which develops high quality software for the insurance industry.  Most of the students will continue to work with Duck Creek Technologies through the school year.

“We have a special relationship with Duck Creek,” noted Dr. DeClue.  “The CEO is an alumnus of SBU, Duck Creek continues to be our largest employer, and of course they are located within a mile or two of campus.”

Two interns worked for the Bolivar Public School System, and several interns worked for companies located in Springfield including ANPAC, Associated Electric Cooperative, and Jack Henry and Associates.  Two interns worked for Gateway EDI in St. Louis.

Senior Ryan McGlaughlin spent the summer at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago with about 100 interns from around the world working on a “climate simulation called the Community Climate System Model,” where he, “worked on load balancing…for different processor counts on a 2,500 processor cluster.”  According to Ryan, there were no set hours, no dress code, and a very informal work environment.  Ryan said it was “…cool to meet and work with internationally known researchers.”

Junior Rebecca LaChance spent the summer working for Associated Electric Cooperative in Springfield, a company that manages the flow of electricity on the power grid in Southern Missouri.

“The greatest thing about my internship was the challenge,” said LaChance. “I did not know how to do all the tasks that they required of me, which was a blessing in disguise. I acquired so many great skills during my internship.

“The system I worked on was called the Energy Management System, and I helped modify the software that models the usage of energy in this part of the country.”

SBU’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences has five faculty members and close to 70 students majoring in the computer or information sciences.  Among evangelical Christian institutions, SBU is one of the leading producers of software engineers in the United States.
