BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University invites the public to a benefit concert featuring the band Big Smith at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, in Pike Auditorium

SBU’s Director of University Ministries Kurt Caddy was able to take two teams to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation last year.  Caddy said, “It was an amazing experience that still impacts my life.  Pine Ridge is the poorest county in the United States.  The Lakota people have so many needs. Due to the 80% unemployment rate and an average annual income of under $6000 it is nearly impossible to provide a Christmas for a family. This concert will be great family event of music and friendship.”

“Due to the generosity of Big Smith and the other musicians participating,” Caddy said, “all proceeds from the concert will go to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to help provide a Christmas celebration for their children.”

SBU Chamber Orchestra Presents Free Concert

Southwest Baptist University News Release
Contact: Sharina Smith, Office of Marketing & Communications
417-328-1803 / scsmith@sbuniv.edu

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The public is invited to attend a free concert featuring the Southwest Baptist University Chamber Orchestra, Dr. Brian K. Hopwood, conductor, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 4. The concert will be presented in the Meyer Recital Hall, Casebolt Music Center on the SBU campus.

An eclectic mix of traditional and modern works is included in the concert program. Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso, Op 6, No. 8, also known as the “Christmas Concerto,” will feature concertino (solo) violins, cello, and harpsichord.

The modern and contemporary Vier Kleine Stücke (Four Small Pieces) by Karel Husa was composed in 1955. Husa’s musical language includes driving rhythms and rich, modern harmonies using bitonality and modal scale forms. The work begins with a first movement containing six different stylistic variations. Some sections even have a modern jazz or rock feel. Sanseneon by Robert Frost is a commissioned work by the Ohio Music Education Association. At its premiere during a festival in Bellevue, Ohio, the work was untitled. The composer, who conducted the premiere, observed a map showing four of the counties represented by the performing students (Sandusky, Seneca, Erie, Huron). Searching for a title representative of the area, the composer began trying various combinations of the letters from these words, ultimately resulting in the new word and title.

The very lyrical A Quiet Music by Douglas Wagner and Leroy Anderson’s popular Plink, Plank, Plunk will round out the program.

For more information, please call Brian K. Hopwood, department of music, at 417-328-1647 or email him at: bhopwood@sbuniv.edu.

BOLIVAR, Mo.The Southwest Baptist University Computer and Information Sciences Department competitive programmers recorded their first victory of the year against the University of Portland.   SBU’s top team consisting of senior Ashley Jones, senior Ryan McGlaughlin and sophomore Weston Herrington solved six of eight problems during the three hour competition.

SBU’s second team, consisting of freshman David Haugh, freshman Luke Abbott and freshman Jason Jakusz finished second in the competition by completing five problems.

SBU’s C team consisted of sophomore Maaura Stuckey, senior Megan Burnett and senior Matt Copeland.  All the teams are coached by Mr. James Cain and Dr. Baochuan Lu, both assistant professors of computer science.

The University of Portland’s top team finished in third place with four problems. Their B team finished in fourth place.

“This was similar to an exhibition or preseason competition – the University of Portland is a Christian school on the West Coast with a good reputation, and we were looking for someone outside our region to compete against,” said Dr. DeClue, Chair of the SBU CIS Department. “They fit the bill and both our teams benefitted from the meet.”

SBU’s competitive programming team will compete in the Midwest Regional Programming Contest in Indianapolis, Ind., and are preparing for the ultimate showdown at the IBM-sponsored International Collegiate Programming Contest (also called the “Battle of the Brains”) in November.
