BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University invites the public to a free presentation, “The Curious Case of South West Baptist Academy of William Jewell College, Western Baptist College & The Fire of 1910,” on Thursday, May 13, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. in Meyer Recital Hall, Casebolt Music and Fine Arts building on the Bolivar campus.

The presentation is designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the fire that destroyed the college on June 1, 1910, and address some of the questions that continue to swirl around that devastating fire:
Why was William Jewell College involved?
Why did Western Baptist College (African-American) hold a deed to SWBC?
Why didn't the fire department respond immediately when first called?
Was it arson or just an unfortunate accident?

According to the SBU Archives, “You will see the images.  You will see the headlines.  You will hear the words of the people of that era.  To get a true sense of history.... attend this special event.”

Forensics Team Finishes the Season Strong in Minnesota

Southwest Baptist University News Release

417-328-1803 / scsmith@sbuniv.edu

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University speech and debate team ended their season with a strong showing at the Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Tournament held in Minnesota.  Fifty-six colleges and universities from twenty other states attended this tournament.  Speakers representing SBU included Caprice Applequist, Kelly Crosby, Jordan Hart, Evan Johnson, Becca Koe, Chelsea Turner, Jenna Ward, and Justin Wessels.  The team was accompanied by Acting Director of Forensics Jordan Compton, former team member Brea Morris, and was eventually joined by Dr. Jeff Waters, dean of the Geneva Casebolt College of Music, Arts & Letters.

In assessing the three long days of competition, Compton noted:  “The manner in which our students represented themselves, the team, and the University at this extremely competitive tournament was nothing short of amazing.  The quality and quantity of competition at this tournament is hard to describe.  We competed with the best of the best.”  This was the second tournament of the season that the team had been without the late Dr. Bob Derryberry, long-time director of SBU’s forensics team.  Compton noted:  “Bob Derryberry always casts a large shadow at any tournament, but his absence at a PKD tournament was apparent to us and many other teams as well.  I was so proud of the way our team handled this difficult circumstance.”

In overall achievement at the tournament, the SBU team finished fifth in debate, ninth in individual events, and seventh in overall competition.  Some of the other top programs included Ohio University, Gustavus Adolphus, Boise State, Carson-Newman, and Webster University.

In reflection of his experience at the PKD tournament, Dr. Waters commented:  “It was an absolutely delightful experience to see our students in action as they not only represented the finest in public speaking skill and artistry, but as they so beautifully represented their university and its established reputation in this arena.”

SBU had numerous individual achievements in both individual events and debate.  In duo interpretation, the team of Becca Koe and Evan Johnson were Semi-Finalists.  Koe and Johnson also received awards in Persuasive Speaking with Becca finishing in third place and Johnson receiving a Semi-Finalist award.  Koe was also a Semi-Finalist in Dramatic Interpretation.  Caprice Applequist and Jordan Hart were Quarter-Finalists in Extemporaneous Speaking and finished in sixth and fourth place respectively in the experimental To Honor the Environment event.  Applequist was also a Quarter-Finalist in Informative Speaking and received an Excellent award in Impromptu Speaking.  Also receiving an Excellent award was Justin Wessels.  Kelly Crosby received a Quarter-Finalist award in Poetry Interpretation.

In debate, the Open Parliamentary Debate team of Jordan Hart and Becca Koe earned first place for their efforts at the tournament.  Compton said he had “the pleasure of handing Hart and Koe their first place trophies with a possible tear in his eyes -- a topic that is still being debated among the team.”  Kelly Crosby was the first place speaker in IPDA and was also a Semi-Finalist.  The Novice Parliamentary Debate team of Jenna Ward and Chelsea Turner were Quarter-Finalists.  The Open Parliamentary Debate team of Caprice Applequist and Evan Johnson were Octa-Finalists with Johnson receiving the fifteenth place speaker award.

Tournament Director and Director of Forensics at Webster University, Scott Jensen, had words of praise for the efforts of the SBU squad:  “I take my hat off to Mr. Compton and the fine group of scholars at SBU. I have admired your program since I was a freshman in 1981. And I have never admired it (and its students and staff) more than I did this weekend. Be proud. You deserve it.”

Doubt Takes the Stage at SBU

Southwest Baptist University News Release

417-328-1803 / scsmith@sbuniv.edu

BOLIVAR, Mo. – “What do you do when you’re not sure?” So begins John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer-Prize winning play, Doubt, which will run at Southwest Baptist University April 29-May 1 and May 6-8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Davis-Newport Theater located in the Jester Learning and Performance Center on the Bolivar campus.
The play tells the story of one nun’s suspicions about a priest in her parish. Her certainty – and ours – is put to the test in this compelling production. The audience is invited to participate in a discussion following each performance.
Doubt will be directed by Assistant Professor of Theatre Dr. Elissa Sartwell. The world of a 1964 Catholic School is brought to life by scenic designer and Assistant Professor of Theatre Dustin Shaffer. The play features junior Holly Stubbs as Sister Aloysius and freshman Alisha Tyler as Mrs. Muller. On April 29, May 1, and May 7, the role of Father Flynn will be played by sophomore Zach McCoy and Sister James will be performed by freshman Amy Patchen. On April 30, May 6, and May 8, freshman Jake Carver will portray Father Flynn and junior Jessica Horner will play Sister James.
“Early on, we decided to go with two different Father Flynns and two different Sister James in this production.,” said Dr. Sartwell. “In part, this was to give more students an opportunity to perform, but ultimately to illustrate how the same script can be perceived differently. Our two casts help to show how blurry the line is between doubt and certainty. Who knows? You may come two different nights and walk away with two completely different understandings of Father Flynn’s guilt or innocence.”
For tickets please call the SBU box office at (417)328-1691. Tickets are free for faculty members, $2 for SBU students, $3 for seniors, and $5 at the door for everyone else.

SBU Student Selected to Participate in Undergraduate Laboratory

Southwest Baptist University News Release

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Ryan McGlaughlin (sophomore computer science from Molene, Ill.) has been selected to participate in the Department of Energy's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) this summer. He has been assigned to work with a scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago for ten weeks. Only around 460 students in the entire nation were selected to participate in last year’s program, and only 60 were accepted into the program at the Argonne National Laboratories. Argonne is the nation's first and oldest national laboratory and resulted from the World War II Manhattan Project.

According to Computer and Information Sciences Department Chair Dr. Tim Declue, SBU CIS Department has had 15 students participate in various government-sponsored internship programs like SERS (Science and Energy Research Semester) and DMP (Distributed Mentoring Program), but this is the first time one of our students has been selected to SULI. Dr. DeClue said, “This is a great honor for Ryan, and reflects very positively on the SBU CIS and Math Departments where Ryan has found his academic home at SBU.”

According to the Argonne website, "As the nation's first national laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory conducts basic and applied scientific research across a wide spectrum of disciplines, ranging from high-energy physics to climatology and biotechnology. Since 1990, Argonne has worked with more than 600 companies and numerous federal agencies and other organizations to help advance America's scientific leadership and prepare the nation for the future.” Some of the historic accomplishments at Argonne include America's first high-temperature-superconducting wire, GREET software which evaluates advanced vehicle technologies and new fuels, Grid computing and the Globus toolkit, recycling automotive plastics economically and efficiently, ultrananocrystalline diamond films and other nanotechnologies, the PROTECT early-warning system for chemical and biological attacks and the Sync Matrix emergency response software, among many others.

SBU CIS Department Competitive Programmers Finish Second in Region

Southwest Baptist University News Release
Contact: Sharina Smith, Office of Marketing & Communications

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University’s competitive computer programming teams finished second and seventh, respectively, in a field of seventeen teams at the Annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSC) Central Plains Region Programming Contest held recently at Park University in Parkville, Missouri. SBU’s top finishing team consisting of Weston Herrington (FR, Carthage, MO), Jordan Hull (FR, Greenfield, MO) and Derek Tran (FR, Kansas City, MO) finished in second place, completing three problems in a cumulative time of 376 minutes. SBU’s seventh-place team consisting of Maaura Stucky (FR, Kansas City, MO), Charlie Chapman (JR, St. Louis, MO), and Jonathan Keedy (JR, Camdenton, MO) completed two problems in 152 minutes. Complete results included at end.

“The battle for the top spot ended up being between us and Northeastern Oklahoma,” said Dr. Tim DeClue, chair of the SBU Computer and Information Sciences Department. “Truman made a pretty valiant effort to keep up, but ultimately they finished almost two hours behind us. Central and UMKC both made an early run, too, but couldn’t get a successful solution in on a problem that required testing for values into the billions—they both forgot to do it and our kids and the NEO team left them in the computational dust. Northeastern was a team we hadn’t seen before, and they edged us fair and square. Still I am very proud of all of our kids—especially the three freshmen on our A team that hunted with the big dogs today. We don’t have a single senior on either team. They’ll all be back next year a year older and wiser. Four of our six students are freshmen, and the other two have some great leadership abilities. I wouldn’t want to be competing against next year. We have an opportunity to field a couple of teams that could be scary good.”
The two SBU teams are coached by SBU CIS faculty Professor Jeff Kimball and Dr. Baochuan Lu. The CCSC consists of ten regions located within the continental U.S. The Central Plains region is generally considered to consist of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Nebraska. The 2010 conference was the sixteenth annual conference. Southwest Baptist University hosted the very first Central Plains conference in 1994, and again in 2009. Programming contests have been a part of the Central Plains CCSC seven years in a row. Southwest Baptist has been the champion four of the seven years.

Southwest Baptist University News Release

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Department of Music at Southwest Baptist University will showcase two ensembles of jazz musicians in a joint concert on Tuesday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Meyer Recital Hall on the SBU campus. The joint concert is free and open to the public.

Scat-us Quo, the select vocal jazz ensemble of SBU will present a variety of music by well-known jazz composers such as Paul Desmond, Dizzie Gillespie, and Louis Prima. “Much of the music revolves around scat-singing, thus the genesis of our name,” explained Dr. James Tarrant, director of Choral Studies at SBU. “The greats in the business make scat-singing look easy, but it is more difficult than it looks.”

Scat-us Quo will perform about half of the concert a cappella. “There’s even a bit of Shakespeare for the classical lovers,” Dr. Tarrant added.

For the second half of the concert, the SBU Jazz Ensemble will present a program of big-band jazz music, which includes arrangements of familiar tunes as well as compositions written specifically for 17-piece jazz ensemble. “As usual, we try to include a little something for a variety of jazz tastes—from the old standards to the newer jazz charts,” stated Dr. Jeffery Waters, director of the SBU Jazz Ensemble.

The jazz ensemble program includes a rousing arrangement of the classic “Bernie’s Tune,” as well “Blue Five Jive,” and “Jada,” two other familiar standards from the big bands of Count Basie and Oliver Nelson, respectively. The spotlight will fall on the 5-man trombone section as they are featured in Lennie Niehaus’s “Bonehead;” and “Carla” and “Summer Never Ends,” two lush contemporary ballads, will provide a nice change of pace from the high-energy swing tunes. “Of course, we must include some form of the blues, and ‘Alianza,’ a new work by Erik Morales which forms an ‘alliance’ between swing and Latin rhythms fits that bill nicely,” Dr. Waters said.

SBU Email-Writing Campaign April 6 to Protect Funding for State Program Scholarship

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University students, faculty, and staff are attending an e-mail writing campaign April 6 to urge state legislators to protect Access Missouri Scholarship and Bright Flight funding for all students in both the public and private sectors of higher education.

The campaign is planned to occur between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Room 243 in Jester Learning and Performance Center on the Bolivar campus.

Students, faculty, and staff at SBU’s Salem, Mt. View, and Springfield campuses are urged to e-mail and call their state legislators and the Governor’s office as well.

Governor Jay Nixon recently stated that he is seeking to eliminate 15,500 independent college students from the Access Missouri and Bright Flight financial aid programs. Nixon's proposal would make Missouri the only state in the country that does not provide financial aid to students attending independent institutions. SBU currently has more than 700 students participating in the Access Missouri and Bright Flight scholarship programs. This represents nearly $1.2 million in financial aid (tuition) that goes to the students, not the University.

Bills are pending in the Missouri House and Senate that would “equalize” Access Missouri scholarship amounts to students of four-year public and independent colleges and universities at a maximum of $2,850 per year, a level of support agreed to by members of the higher education community.

The Missouri Coalition of Independent Colleges and Universities, which has been working to keep the Access Missouri program from being taken away from the independent sector of higher education, is encouraging legislators to keep Access Missouri in place for students attending public and independent colleges in our state so that students with financial need have access to state financial aid. They also are encouraging the elimination of the "sunset clause" which would terminate the Access Missouri program in 2013. Finally, the group is asking legislators to hold harmless students who are already receiving Access Missouri awards.

"We are encouraging everyone to write the Governor and their state senators and representatives to let them know they need to support legislation to continue the Access Missouri Scholarship program for all Missouri college students. Cutting funding to students who choose to attend a private college or university would be harmful to both students and our state," said Brad Gamble, SBU director of financial aid.
