BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University’s President C. Pat Taylor and First Lady Judy Taylor hosted a public open house for the newly renovated SBU Health Sciences, Davis Family Physical Therapy Center on Monday, September 26.  The facility opened to students and faculty at the beginning of the academic year in August.

The building’s opening extends the Bolivar campus south on Springfield Avenue. SBU purchased the former Consumer’s building with the help of a major gift from the Warren B. Davis family, the previous property owners.

The property is located at 2103 S. Springfield Avenue approximately one block from the University. The 40,000 square-foot building will house the University’s doctoral program in physical therapy.

SBU President Pat Taylor said, “The current physical therapy space on the main campus allowed for only 40 doctoral students to be admitted each year for a total enrollment of 120. Now the program will be able to admit 80 students per year, which will increase the total number of doctoral students to 240 after three years.”

Plans for the building renovation were designed by GHN Architects in consultation with the SBU physical therapy faculty. The Killian Group handled the construction. The building’s current tenant, Dollar General, will remain in the building.

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Master of Business Administration program at Southwest Baptist University now offers five areas of specialization and two graduate certificates. All MBA students can opt into one of these tracks: Management, Human Resource Management, Information Assurance, Healthcare Administration, or Applied Scholarship.

Dr. Kenneth Bandy, dean of SBU’s College of Business & Computer Science (COBACS) said “MBA students can graduate with an area of emphasis or take 18 hours to complete a graduate certificate in Information Assurance or Healthcare Administration. Information Assurance is concerned with information security. Applied Scholarship is designed for those budding professors and researchers who want to serve in higher education.

“The new MBA track approach provides two advantages, Dr. Bandy said. “Attaining a specialization can help improve your marketability for new employment and/or demonstrate added value to your current employer.  Another advantage is the MBA program is now a 36-hour program instead of a 40+-hour program. This reduction in hours simplifies students’ planning for their graduate program and scheduling courses. It can also reduce the length of time they spend in the program.”

Current MBA students may still remain in their original program. If they are near the end of their program, they may determine it is best to follow their existing course of study. Dr. Bandy said, “We will continue to add tracks and certificates as the opportunities to do so arise.”

New students who wish to apply or current students who would like to declare one of the new tracks, should contact graduate assistant Nathan Brown at 417-328-1751 or nabrown@sbuniv.edu to set up an advising teleconference with one of the MBA faculty members.
