SBU to host faculty trumpet recital

BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist University Department of Music will host a faculty trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Meyer Recital Hall featuring Tim Wootton, adjunct professor of trumpet. Wootton will be accompanied by his wife and pianist, Carla Wootton.

The program will include virtuosic showpieces, well-known songs and the premiere of the “Trumpet Sonata in Three Movements” by Michael Schwartz. The recital is free and open to the public.

Wind Symphony selected to perform at MMEA conference

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Southwest Baptist University’s Wind Symphony has been selected by audition as one of two university bands to perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association 76th Annual In-Service Workshop/Conference Jan. 22-25, 2014, at the Tan-Tar-A resort in Osage Beach.

“The opportunity to perform for one's peers and colleagues in the field is certainly a challenge, but also an honor well deserved by the students in the Wind Symphony,” said Brian K. Hopwood, DMA, associate professor, director of instrumental studies and Wind Symphony conductor. “Being selected from among hundreds of submissions is a testament to the quality of our students, faculty and institution. We are excited for the chance to represent SBU in front of hundreds of music educators in our state.”

The performance is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in Salon A of the Grand Ballroom.

Dr. Kathy Brown receives Parkway award

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Dr. Kathy Brown, professor of music, has been named the Parkway Distinguished Professor for 2013 at Southwest Baptist University. 

The award is presented annually by Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis upon nomination by the SBU Deans Council. Each recipient is known as a Parkway Distinguished Professor and receives a monetary award.

A nominee must have full-time faculty rank at SBU, have taught at SBU for at least four years, have taught a minimum of 12 full-time equivalent teaching load hours during the past year and have not previously received this award.

Brown authors ‘Lotte Lehmann in America’       

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Dr. Kathy Brown, professor of music at Southwest Baptist University, has written “Lotte Lehmann in America,” published by The College Music Society as a part of the series Monographs and Bibliographies in American Music.

Lehmann, a German-born soprano, added the role of teacher to her accomplishments in the opera house and on the recital stage in post-World War II America. She disclosed to aspiring singers insights regarding interpretation, information that was gleaned from recordings and transcripts held at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Dr. Brown also provides an overview of Lehmann’s career, an account of her work with the Music Academy of the West, an assortment of the singer’s own translations and reproductions of her paintings based on the lieder of Schubert and Schumann.

SBU students chosen for Small College Intercollegiate Band

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Four students from Southwest Baptist University traveled to the University of North Carolina in Greensboro to perform with The 2013 Small College Intercollegiate Band March 23.

The group included more than 80 auditioned musicians representing 46 schools from across the nation. More than 260 students representing 53 schools applied for admission into the ensemble. SBU was one of two small colleges representing Missouri. The concert on March 23 was part of the biennial convention of the College Band Directors National Association attended by their Wind Symphony conductor, Dr. Brian Hopwood.

Students participating were Lauren Asbery playing clarinet, a senior Music Education major from Bentonville, Ark.; Morgan Katz playing trumpet, a junior Music major from Hampton, Iowa; Lucas McLaughlin playing trombone, a senior Music and Math major from St. Joseph; and Matt Hopwood playing percussion, a junior Music Education major from Bolivar.

“It was an honor and a very rewarding experience,” McLaughlin said. “I've participated in a lot of honor bands, but I've never played in a group this good. Excellent musicians from small colleges around the country gathered together to make this band, and it was a great-sounding group.” 

The group was under the direction of Craig Kirchoff, Professor of Conducting and Director of University Bands at the University of Minnesota where he conducts the University Wind Ensemble and guest conducts in the University Opera Program.

The students were impressed with Kirchoff’s ability.

“It was an amazing experience to play with so many extraordinary players,” Asbery said. “I learned so much from working with Professor Kirchoff.”

Matt Hopwood added, “I've never played under a conductor with as much presence and expressivity as Professor Kirchoff. The music that he could summon from the ensemble with his facial expressions alone was astonishingly profound!”

Musical selections included “Armenian Folk Song and Dance” by Aram Khachaturian, “Olympic Fireworks” by David Stanhope, “Sheltering Sky” by John Mackey, “Danzón No. 2” by Arturo Márquez, “My Jesus! Oh, What Anguish” by J.S. Bach, and “First Suite in Eb, Op. 28 No. 1” by Gustav Holst.

Morgan Katz agreed that SCIB was “a wonderful experience. I learned a lot from Professor Kirchoff's direction, and I enjoyed attending the evening concerts put on by bands from other colleges.”

SBU Masterworks concert is May 3

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Department of Music of Southwest Baptist University will present its Masterworks Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, in Pike Auditorium. The department’s massed choirs and orchestra will present “Sunrise Mass” by Ola Gjeilo and “Toward the Unknown Region” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.  There is no admission charge.

Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) was born in Norway in 1978 and moved to the United States in 2001 to begin his composition studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. A full-time composer based in the U.S., Ola is also interested in film, and his music draws a lot of inspiration from movies and cinematic music.

“Toward the Unknown Region” is the poem by Walt Whitman that Ralph Vaughan Williams set to music early in his career. Working through a counterpoint of diminished harmonies, it concludes heroically with a hymn-like presence.

“Both of these works leave no listener untouched by a sense of anticipation,” said Dr. James R. Tarrant, professor of music and director of choral studies at SBU. “As with each Masterworks performance, the program requires the talents and numbers we are fortunate to have at SBU.”

In its fourth decade, the Masterworks presentation annually provides southwest Missouri audiences the opportunity to experience musical works that are best presented by the combined efforts of department, university and community. The repertoire has included the great classics, the unfamiliar pearls and modern compositions of significance.

SBU Wind Symphony concert is April 23

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University Department of Music presents “Spring in the Ozarks – A Celebration of the Season” featuring music performed by the SBU Wind Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar Campus. Works by Reed, Bryant, Iannaccone, Whitacre and Vaughan Williams are featured by the 55-member ensemble.

“The music from this concert is connected to the spring season in some way,” said Dr. Brian Hopwood, conductor and director of instrumental studies at SBU. “Many of history’s great composers have been fascinated with spring and used this season of rebirth, renewal and resurrection as inspiration in their compositions. Works like Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’ from the ‘Four Seasons,’ Beethoven’s ‘Spring Sonata’ (Violin Sonata in F, op. 24), the ‘Spring Symphony, op. 44’ by Benjamin Britten for chorus and orchestra and ‘Schumann’s Symphony No. 1’ (Spring) are but a few in this category.”

The concert will open with Alfred Reed’s concert overture “The Hounds of Spring,” written on commission and dedicated to the John L. Forster Secondary School Symphonic Band of Windsor, Ontario. The inspiration and title comes from a 19th-century poem, “Atlanta in Calydon,” a magical picture of young love in springtime. The setting is an attempt to capture the twin elements of the poem, exuberant youthful gaiety and the sweetness of tender love, in an appropriate musical texture. According to composer Steven Bryant, “Dusk” is a “simple, chorale-like work [which] captures the reflective calm of dusk, paradoxically illuminated by the fiery hues of sunset. I’m always struck by the dual nature of this experience, as if witnessing an event of epic proportions silently occurring in slow motion.”

Anthony Iannaccone wrote “After a Gentle Rain” on a commission from the Eastern Michigan Symphonic Band in 1979. Its two movements, “The Dark Green Glistens with Old Reflections” and “Sparkling Air Bursts with Dancing Sunlight,” clearly paint mental images for the listener. The work is to a certain degree both quasi-programmatic and quasi-impressionistic. “Cloudburst,” by Eric Whitacre, was originally composed for SATB choir and percussion in 1991 and was transcribed on commission for wind band by the composer in 2001. Whitacre was inspired to write the work after witnessing an actual (“breathtaking”) desert cloudburst. The lyrics are based on the poem “The Broken Water Jug” by Octavio Paz.

Whitacre describes the two versions: “Where the choral version is intimate and delicate, the version for winds is strong and assured, and to my ears it sounds like it’s suddenly in Technicolor … on a 50-foot screen.”

The program will conclude with a wind band cornerstone, “English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

SBU Chamber Orchestra’s spring concert is April 18

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Southwest Baptist University’s Chamber Orchestra, with Dr. Brian K. Hopwood as conductor, will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in the Meyer Recital Hall, Casebolt Music Building, on the SBU campus.

The concert opens with the third movement of Antonio Vivaldi’s “Violin Concerto in E major,” Op. 8, No. 1, RV 269, “La primavera” (Spring) for string orchestra. The first of Vivaldi’s four concertos from “The Four Seasons” will feature senior and concertmistress Molly Morgan as the violin soloist.

In stark contrast, “Danza,” a three-movement work written in 1971 contains some of the same compositional techniques as Vivaldi but in a contemporary setting.

“Czech composer Vaclav Nelhybel’s affinity for Renaissance and Baroque period music is evident in the use of modal melodies, parallel intervals in conjunct motion and fugal techniques, including imitative entries, stretto and augmentation,” Hopwood said.

Robert Washburn’s “Suite for Strings,” written in a “conservative” contemporary idiom, will follow. His first published work (1960) was composed while Washburn was composer-in-residence in Elkhart, Ind., under a year-long grant from the Ford Foundation, administered by the Music Educators National Conference, which placed 12 young composers in schools with outstanding music programs for the purpose of writing music for their students and the community.

The program also includes the “Sentimental Saraband” and “Frolicsome Finale” from “Simple Symphony” in celebration of composer Benjamin Britten’s 100^th birthday and the Ralph Vaughan Williams inspired “Preludio” by Paul Whear, written for the Vivaldi Orchestra in Manchester, England.

SBU Jazz Ensemble in concert April 16

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The SBU Jazz Ensemble will be featured in concert under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Waters at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in Pike Auditorium on the SBU campus.

The 16-piece Jazz Ensemble is the premiere ensemble on campus dedicated to the exclusive study of jazz music and will feature SBU student performers in a program that includes the wide variety of styles associated with today’s big-band jazz ensemble.

The program includes the lively “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” from the ’40s; a medley of Henry Mancini’s music from the ’50s and ’60s (“Peter Gunn,” “Baby Elephant Walk” and “Pink Panther,” among others); and a number of more contemporary works such as Neil Slater’s “Side Effects” and Craig Skeffington’s “Using the Force.”

SBU Opera Workshop performance is April 11

BOLIVAR, Mo. – SBU's Opera Workshop is presenting its second scene program of the academic year at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Meyer Recital Hall in the Casebolt Music Building.

After a fully staged production of Mozart's “Cosi fan tutte,” or “The School for Lovers,” in March, five staged scenes from operetta and opera will be performed. The production will be accompanied by Sara Miller.

The scene program will include pieces from Gilbert and Sullivan's “The Pirates of Penzance” and “The Mikado,” Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” and Donizetti's ”The Elixir of Love.” The performance will last about 35 minutes and is free to the public, said stage director Jane Munson-Berg, Associate Professor of Voice and Opera.
