DeWeese receives service award

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Eldonna DeWeese, editor of the Southern Baptist Periodical Index and assistant professor emeritus at the University Libraries of Southwest Baptist University, received the Betty Hurtt Meritorious Service Award presented by the Association of Librarians and Archivist at Baptist Institutions.

SBPI is an index of Southern Baptist periodicals that was initially published by the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. University Libraries began publishing the Index in 1986. DeWeese has been the editor since the University Libraries took control of publishing. In addition, she served in various capacities in the University Libraries for 25 years, including acting dean, retiring in 2003.

“Throughout her career she continually exhibited a warm and cheerful attitude when working on projects with university faculty and students and with other librarians and archivists,” the award resolution stated. “The Association of Librarians and Archivists at Baptist Institutions acknowledges the significance of her admirable and exceptional contributions to the Baptist library and archive profession.”

DeWeese has served as an active ALABI member, including serving as the organization’s president from 2004-05, and as ALABI secretary, program committee chair and as a member of many other committees.
