Speaking Bearcats Perform Well at Longview Tournament

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Speaking Bearcats from Southwest Baptist University recently represented their competitive speech and debate legacy well with an outstanding performance at the Longview Swing Tournament against twenty-four other teams. On the Friday-Saturday tournament, the team earned second place in debate sweepstakes and first overall in individual events and debate combined.

Nik Fischer earned second in impromptu speaking, second in extemporaneous speaking, and fourth in communication analysis. Lauren Schriver earned fifth in dramatic interpretation. Shawna Barkley earned third in persuasive speaking and fourth in informative speaking. Meg Burns earned sixth in after dinner speaking. Jenna King earned fifth in program of oral interpretation.

In debate, Nik Fischer and Shawna Barkley were the tournament champions in novice parliamentary debate. Matt Adams, Meg Burns, and Jenna King were all quarterfinalists in novice parliamentary debate. Kaila Todd and Lauren Hembree were honorably mentioned for their winning results in novice parliamentary debate.

Sunday had its own victories of first place in individual events sweepstakes and second overall in the tournaments combined.

Matt Adams earned fifth in informative speaking, and sixth in after dinner speaking. Jenna King earned second in after dinner speaking. Shawna Barkley earned third in persuasive speaking and second in informative speaking. Lauren Schriver earned third place in dramatic interpretation. Meg Burns earned first in prose interpretation and fourth in dramatic interpretation.
