Speaking Bearcats finish the year in “Superior” fashion

BOLIVAR, Mo.The Speaking Bearcats from Southwest Baptist University finished the 2012-2013 season in strong fashion, earning “Superior” rankings in each of the three sweepstakes categories — debate, individual events and overall — at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament March 13-16 at Webster University in St. Louis, Mo.

The tournament featured entries from 86 colleges and universities from 36 different states. The Speaking Bearcats finished with the third highest point total in overall sweepstakes, finishing just behind William Carey University and defending champion Boise State University.

“I am very proud of the team,” said Dr. David Bailey the Director of Forensics. “Our students did a tremendous job, especially when you consider that we are still mostly a freshmen and sophomore squad. They fared very well competing against teams that were much larger and more experienced.”

He was quick to add, however, that it is both the educational value of the activity and the sense of team-orientation that will benefit the students most.

“Success is not measured in trophies. The real measure of the success of this year’s team will be the later accomplishments of the team members themselves,” he said. “The things they learned about public policy, argumentation, performance, politics, economics and a host of other fields, combined with all the hours of tedious practice and research it took to hone their performances, will pay dividends for each one of them. That is what makes me proudest of all. I know each one of them will make a difference in the world.”

The team posted a number of strong results in debate including:
·         Nik Fischer and Meg Burns were quarterfinalists in both parliamentary debate and college public forum debate.
·         Julie Strubinger and Maggie Thomas reached the quarterfinals of parliamentary debate.
·         Chad Bryant went undefeated in preliminary rounds of public debate and reached the quarterfinals of that event. His strong preliminary round results enabled him to earn the “Top Superior” in novice public debate.
·         Leah Cleek compiled a strong record in open public debate and narrowly missed advancing to the elimination rounds of the event.
·         Bobby Sterling received an “Excellent” (top 30 percent) award in novice legislative debate.
·         Kaila Todd received an “Excellent” award in discussion.
Squad members also compiled a number of strong results in individual events:
·         Burns earned the “Top Superior” award in communication analysis. She also earned Superiors in “To Honor Pi Kappa Delta” and informative speaking. She earned “Excellent” awards in program of oral interpretation and dramatic interpretation.
·         Fischer earned Superiors in communication analysis and impromptu speaking. Fischer earned Excellent awards in extemporaneous speaking and “To Honor Pi Kappa Delta.”
·         Strubinger earned a Superior in informative speaking. She also earned “Good” ratings in almost all of the rest of her events.
·         Thomas earned a Superior in broadcast journalism. She also earned excellent awards in communication analysis and persuasive speaking.
·         Cleek earned Excellent awards in persuasive speaking and communication analysis.
·         Hannah Larino earned a Good in communication analysis and was a participant in the PKD showcase for that event.
·         Chad Bryant earned an Excellent award in after-dinner speaking.
“We also acknowledge each of the other students who traveled with the team to nationals and assisted us by earning a ‘Good’ in at least one of their respective speech or debate events,” Dr. Bailey said. They are Matt Adams, Catie Lathrop, Micah Jordan and the Reader’s Theatre team of Trevor Parrish, Jessica Palen and Kati Clair.

The tournament was the final team outing for the 2012-2013 season except for Thomas, who will be competing in the Interstate Oratorical Contest in Shreveport, La., April 25-27.

Dr. Bailey noted it was an important year for the SBU Forensics Program.

“This year we reclaimed the overall sweepstakes title at our state tournament and took a significant jump up in our standings at PKD nationals; we finished eighth last year and 18th the year before that,” he said. “I look forward to the future growth of the SBU Forensics Program.”

BCFD and SBU collaborate in training for campus fire safety

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Leaders from Bolivar City Fire Department and Southwest Baptist University Safety and Security attended a two-day course, "Firewise Campus," March 19 and 20. The course was fully funded by a Department of Homeland Security grant, allowing the entities to collaborate and create a campus fire safety program.

BCFD Chief Jim Ludden, BCFD Assistant Chief and City of Bolivar Emergency Management Director Brent Watkins, and SBU Assistant Director of Safety and Security Zeke Clawson attended.

“This class provided a multitude of resources and reviewed the planning processes needed to create a culture of fire safety with university students and staff and continued to build the relationships and cooperation with the Bolivar City Fire Department and Southwest Baptist University,” Ludden said.

The course gives fire safety professionals an understanding of successful training methodologies for the college age group, as well as tools and resources they can use to effectively educate students and provide a fire-safe campus environment, according to the Firewise Campus website.

“The Firewise Campus training was a great opportunity to learn effective ways to unite university efforts with local fire department efforts for the protection of students and employees both on and off campus,” Clawson said. “We are looking at ways to provide additional training and fire safety awareness to the university community in effective and meaningful ways.”

SBU recognizes scholarship donors, retiring employee

SBU recognizes scholarship donors, retiring employee

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Private scholarship donors were in the spotlight during Scholarship Appreciation Day Tuesday, March 12, at Southwest Baptist University.

About 500 students receive private scholarships each year from the 351 private scholarship accounts established at SBU. Nearly 80 percent of those funds are endowed, which means they have been funded with at least $10,000. Endowed scholarship funds total about $11 million, nearly half of the university’s $23 million endowment.

“You are having a major impact on the kingdom by your generosity and your willingness to give,” President Dr. C. Pat Taylor told the donors.

Dr. Bill Little, senior professor emeritus of chemistry at SBU and a private scholarship donor, challenged donors to continue giving — and give more.

“What great joy my wife and I have had providing scholarship funds because the Lord has blessed us so much,” Dr. Little said. “It has been such a privilege to teach such good students, some now in top companies and at Ivy League universities. I want to challenge you donors to give more to help students. I would like to see a time come when we’ve doubled the number of students receiving private scholarships. Instead of $11 million, I’d like to see there be $100 million in scholarship endowment.

“If we are going to survive as a nation, it is going to require students who are well-educated and dedicated to the cause of Christ. These students deserve the best.”

Cindy Rice retiring

Cindy Rice, private scholarship development director and estate planning associate, is retiring at the end of March after working at SBU for 36 years. She graduated from SBU in 1973 and has filled a variety of roles, landing in University Relations in 1990 and becoming director of private scholarships in 1994.

“We had a few private scholarships then,” Dr. Taylor said. “We have a lot more now. Cindy has been dedicated to growing our private scholarships.”

A retirement reception for Rice is from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in the Sells Administrative Center at SBU. Rice’s friends, family and former colleagues are welcome.

For more information about establishing a private scholarship fund, please contact Dr. Brad Johnson, vice president for university relations, at (417) 328-1805 or bjohnson@sbuniv.edu.

Google selects SBU again to host summer workshop for teachers

Google selects SBU again to host summer workshop for teachers

BOLIVAR, Mo. — Google has selected Southwest Baptist University’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences to receive a grant for a second year to underwrite a summer 2013 workshop for elementary and secondary school teachers. The grant was approved under Google’s CS4HS (Computer Science for High School) program.

Competition for the grants was “highly competitive,” according to Erin Mindell, manager for the grant program in Google’s New York headquarters. The focus of the two-day workshop, scheduled for July 12-13 at SBU, is to help the teachers begin to incorporate “computational thinking” into classroom activities in all academic disciplines. Teachers of any academic area in middle or high school are invited to the workshop.

CS4HS is an initiative sponsored by Google to promote computer science and computational thinking in high school and middle school curriculum. Workshops developed under the grant incorporate informational talks by industry leaders and discussions on new and emerging CS curricula at the high school and middle school level. About 140 universities worldwide were awarded grants by Google and held workshops in 2012.

“If we reach the teachers, then we have this wider-reaching effect,” said Helene Martin, a high school computer science and CS4HS teacher for Carnegie Mellon University. “As teachers, we ultimately have a lot of impact on what our students do. If we can teach a class that’s engaging and brings in elements that students are intrigued about, they're likely to study it in college. If we can get this group of people excited about computer science themselves, we figure that they can go on and do a little more research, bring in guest speakers, integrate it into their own curriculum and that's how we get the next generation of computer scientists.”

SBU’s workshop is in the Gene Taylor Free Enterprise Center on the Bolivar campus. The event is free, and teachers will be provided a stipend to attend. Teachers may receive one hour of graduate credit for completion of the instructional workshop. Registration details for the workshop will appear on SBU’s website at www.sbuniv.edu in the near future.

With more than 20 top-10 national awards in the last four years, SBU’s CIS Department has established itself as a national leader among CIS departments at evangelical Christian universities in the United States. For more information about the SBU CIS Department, call Dr. Tim DeClue, chair of the CIS Department and professor of computer and information sciences, at (417) 328-1704.

Jones faculty piano recital is March 12

BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist University Department of Music will present Melinda Smashey Jones in Faculty Piano Recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in Meyer Recital Hall. Dr. Jones will present works by Robert Schumann, J. S. Bach, Sergei Prokofiev and William Bolcom.

The recital will begin with Schumann’s “Three Fantasiestücke.” The title was inspired by the 1814 collection of novellas “Fantasiestücke in Callots Manier”by one of Schumann’s favorite authors, E. T. A. Hoffmann. Schumann composed the pieces with the characters Florestan and Eusebius in mind, representing the duality of his personality. “Little Prelude in C Major” and “Little Prelude in D Major,” both written by J. S. Bach for harpsichord, are short pieces that require the performer to exhibit a strong technique. “Piano Sonata No. 6 in A major, Op. 82” is the first of theThree War Sonatas written by Prokofiev in the 1940s. The sonata was first performed April 8, 1940, in Moscow.
