BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) announced today the National Science Foundation/IEEE’s Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (NSF/IEEE TCPP) has named SBU to the early adopter program of the NSF/IEEE TCPP’s Curriculum Initiative for Parallel and Distributed Computing. According to the committee’s website, SBU joins only 33 universities around the world who have achieved the same status.

Dr. Boachuan Lu, SBU assistant professor of CIS, spearheads SBU’s work in parallel and distributed computing. Dr. Lu noted that, “It is really more about the opportunities this curriculum affords our students. I am excited that our students will get to participate in some of the most cutting-edge computing activities taking place anywhere.”
Dr. Tim DeClue |
The initiative, which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Intel, and IBM, encourages universities which have the faculty expertise to adopt the curriculum to prepare their students for the next generation of computational devices. According to the TCPP website, “The TCPP acts as an international forum to promote parallel processing research and education, and participates in setting up technical standards in this area. Issues related to the design, analysis and implementation of parallel systems and solutions are of interest. These include design and analysis of parallel architectures and algorithms, and application development on parallel machines.”
According to Dr. Tim DeClue, chair of the CIS department, “The program is quite selective: 2011 is the first year of the initiative, and only thirty-three universities around the world have achieved early-adopter status with twenty-one of the schools located in the U.S. SBU is the only school in Missouri the committee recognized.”
