BOLIVAR, Mo.Southwest Baptist University’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) announced today the National Science Foundation/IEEE’s Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (NSF/IEEE TCPP) has named SBU to the early adopter program of the NSF/IEEE TCPP’s Curriculum Initiative for Parallel and Distributed Computing.  According to the committee’s website, SBU joins only 33 universities around the world who have achieved the same status.
Dr. Boachuan Lu

Dr. Boachuan Lu, SBU assistant professor of CIS, spearheads SBU’s work in parallel and distributed computing. Dr. Lu noted that, “It is really more about the opportunities this curriculum affords our students. I am excited that our students will get to participate in some of the most cutting-edge computing activities taking place anywhere.”

Dr. Tim DeClue
The initiative, which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Intel, and IBM, encourages universities which have the faculty expertise to adopt the curriculum to prepare their students for the next generation of computational devices. According to the TCPP website, “The TCPP acts as an international forum to promote parallel processing research and education, and participates in setting up technical standards in this area. Issues related to the design, analysis and implementation of parallel systems and solutions are of interest. These include design and analysis of parallel architectures and algorithms, and application development on parallel machines.”

According to Dr. Tim DeClue, chair of the CIS department, “The program is quite selective: 2011 is the first year of the initiative, and only thirty-three universities around the world have achieved early-adopter status with twenty-one of the schools located in the U.S.  SBU is the only school in Missouri the committee recognized.”

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Students from the Southwest Baptist University Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) Department laid claim to seven national top-ten awards at the recent Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) National Leadership Conference held in Orlando, Fla.

Josh Wood (senior, Eldon, Mo.) took the top spot in the nation in the Computer Concepts competition, which included $750 in prize money.  Wood and Ryan Thomas (junior, Tulsa, Okla.) teamed up for third-place honors in Network Design.  Luke Abbott (sophomore, Camdenton, Mo.) accepted the third place trophy in Game and Simulation Programming and Thomas snagged a sixth-place finish in Cybersecurity.  Rounding out SBU’s efforts were the husband and wife team of Matt and Ashley Copeland (Bolivar, Mo.).  Matt claimed seventh place in Database Management and Ashley took home the award for ninth in Network Concepts.   Jacob Foster (sophomore, Webb City, Mo.) and Jacob Jakusz (sophomore, Theodosia, Mo.) were also national qualifiers and competed for Missouri and competed at the national event.

“We are elated, of course,” said Dr. Tim DeClue, CIS Department Chair.  “These awards are a real blessing.  Receiving something like this on the national stage highlights the incredible quality of our students and our program.  it puts an exclamation mark on the end of a great year, and it helps us get a running start on the beginning of the next.  This is a really motivated group of students right now—they are ready to hit the ground running in the fall.”

PBL's National Awards Program recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. Through state-based competition at the spring State Leadership Conferences, students compete in events testing their business knowledge and skills. Top state winners then are eligible to compete for honors at the National Leadership Conference each summer.
