BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Jazz Ensemble will be featured in concert under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Waters on Tuesday, April 26.  The 18-piece Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to being the voice of American jazz in the campus community, and will once again feature SBU student performers in a program which includes the wide variety of styles associated with today’s big-band jazz ensemble.

The program includes Missouri’s own jazz composer Bret Spainhour’s compositions “Den of Inequity” and “Spellbound,” which are pieces written in the last decade and continue the big-band traditions in fresh new ways. The band will showcase a contemporary arrangement of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan,” as played by the band Chicago. The pace will relax a bit with Pat Metheny’s “Every Summer Night” and Jeff Jarvis’s rich ballad “Night Sky.”  Rounding out the program will be newer jazz charts with titles that are as catchy and engaging as their music:  be-bop styled “Chill Factor,” Egyptian flavored “The Dance of Denial,” funky “The Chicken,” and the swinging “Shuffle Puck.”

“The jazz ensemble will play a little bit of everything from our bag of jazz styles and repertoire,” Dr. Waters stated. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Meyer Recital Hall on the SBU campus, admission is free, and the public is invited.
