Two
SBU students receive Phi Eta Sigma competitive scholarships
BOLIVAR, Mo. — Two Southwest Baptist University
students have received scholarships from a competitive scholarship program
through Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society that recognizes academic
achievement during the first year of college.
Caleb Harris, the SBU chapter’s senior adviser, has been
awarded a $7,500 graduate scholarship, one of only four awarded nationwide. He
is a senior accounting major and the son of William and Judy Harris of Jackson.
He has been hired by BKD CPAs and Advisers to begin work after graduating later
this month and will use the scholarship to pursue a Master of Business
Administration degree through an online program.
Meg Goodman, the SBU chapter’s secretary/treasurer, has been
awarded a $6,000 Undergraduate Scholarship, one of only 37 awarded nationwide.
She is a junior accounting major and the daughter of Scott and Teri Goodman of
Cape Girardeau.
Each year PES sponsors a national scholarship competition
for its members in which it awards $285,000 in scholarships.
“The process is highly competitive, and the awards are very
distinguished,” said Jodi Meadows, faculty sponsor for the SBU chapter. “I am
extremely proud of these students, their accomplishments and their service
to our campus as Phi Eta Sigma officers.”
This is the sixth year in a row an SBU student has received
an undergraduate scholarship from PES and the first time for a graduate
scholarship. SBU students have received $28,500 in scholarships from PES since
2007.
Phi Eta Sigma is the oldest academic honor society in the
nation for first year college and university students and has chartered
chapters on 365 campuses across the nation.
