SBU to Benefit from the Pott Foundation Grant

BOLIVAR, Mo. Southwest Baptist University will benefit from a recent $30,000 grant from the Pott Foundation to the Missouri Colleges Fund (MCF).

The grant will underwrite student scholarships at each of the 16 MCF member schools including SBU.

These scholarships will be awarded by the member schools on the basis of financial need.

SBU Faculty Art Exhibition

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Driskill Gallery, located in the Jester Learning and Performance Center of Southwest Baptist University, presents an exhibit of works by SBU faculty, retired faculty, and staff.

Works on display are paintings, digital imaging, photography, prints, drawings, ceramics, turned wood vessels, poetry, fiber art, and carving by 17 faculty and staff members.

The exhibit will run through September 16 and is free and open to the public.  A reception will be held in front of the gallery on Friday, September 2, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday thru Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

SBU Reports Increase in First Day Enrollment

BOLIVAR, MO -- Vice President for Enrollment Management Stephanie Miller said numbers were up for first day enrollment yesterday at Southwest Baptist University.

SBU Freshman Procession 2011


Dr. Miller reported 444 freshmen (up from 437 in 2010) and 115 transfers (up from 111 in 2010).  With this increase in enrollment comes an increase in freshmen ACT scores which average 23.1 this year (up from 22.3 in 2010), Dr. Miller said.

SBU’s Dianna Callahan to exhibit artwork nationally

BOLIVAR, Mo.Southwest Baptist University Driskill Gallery Director Dianna Callahan, an artist from Morrisville, will exhibit artwork this fall that has been juried into national competitions. 

Venues will include:  the Whistler House Museum of Art, Lowell, Mass., August 10 - September 3; the Fennimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, N.Y., September 24 - December 31; The Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita, Kan., August 26 - October 14; the Morton May Foundation Gallery at Maryville University, St. Louis, Mo., September 28 - October 31; and Art St Louis, St. Louis, Mo., September 6 - October 13. 

Callahan also is an art lecturer in the Casebolt College of Music, Arts and Letters of SBU. Her artwork was shown earlier this year in Paducah, Ken., Kansas City Kan., Bolivar and Springfield, Mo.

SBU to Benefit from TEVA Neuroscience Grant 

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University will benefit from a recent $5,000 grant to the Missouri Colleges Fund (MCF) from TEVA Neuroscience, which will underwrite student scholarships at each of the 16 MCF member schools including SBU. These scholarships will be awarded by the member schools on the basis of financial need.

The MCF was formed in 1952 as a non-profit corporation.  The MCF Mission is to acquire resources to help educate students in its 16 member private liberal-arts colleges and universities.

Missouri Colleges Fund member schools include Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar; Avila University, Kansas City; Central Methodist University, Fayette; Columbia College, Columbia; Culver-Stockton College, Canton; Drury University, Springfield; Evangel University, Springfield; Fontbonne University, St. Louis;  Hannibal – LaGrange University, Hannibal; Maryville University, St. Louis; Missouri Baptist University, St. Louis; Park University, Parkville; Rockhurst University, Kansas City; Westminster College, Fulton; William Jewell College, Liberty; and William Woods University, Fulton.

SBU Student Selected for National Intercollegiate Band

SBU Student Selected for National Intercollegiate Band 

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University instrumental music education major, Matthew Hopwood, was recently selected to perform with the National Intercollegiate Band.  The band opens the biennial national convention of the Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma music fraternity and sorority. This year the "Taking Bands to the Summit" convention was held in Colorado Springs, Colo. from July 19-24.


Hopwood performed at the Pikes Peak Center with over 80 college musicians from 50 universities under the baton of Craig Kirchhoff, professor of conducting and director of university bands at the University of Minnesota.  A special feature of this year's concert was the World Premiere of the Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma commissioned work "Repercussions" with the composer Adam Gorb in attendance. Gorb is Head of School of Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

Hopwood, a 2010 graduate of Bolivar High School, is the son of Brian & Franka Hopwood.

The scholarships will be awarded by the member schools to students studying toward attaining degrees in science and math.

SBU to Benefit from Windstream Donation

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University will benefit from a recent donation from Windstream presented by Dave Davis and Dan Rice. The check presented was for $45,000 and will be used for campus involvement. SBU President Pat Taylor is pictured receiving the check.
